Hardware: Inside and Out

  • Play games on external hard disk  It's only possible for some games, depending on whether the game was designed with such facility in mind. Most games can be installed on a removable USB hard disk, though a gamer will experiencee slower performace in the game, or even in the game freezing, because the USB connection transfers data at a much lower bit rate than the internal hard disk drive.
  • The computer won't turn off   This was very common feature with Windows 98 Operating System and it depends on the type of powere supply. The AT models do not allow for the computer to switch off automatically at shut down, whereas the ATX power supply model does. With the ATX model, one can go into BIOS (press Del, Esc, or F2 -- it depends on type of BIOS and displays on your screen -- no sooner you see a bit of writing on the screen at start up), look at the shut down option and select automatic if it's available. N.B. Do no make any other changes to the BIOS unless you know what you're doing.
  • Memory sticks, Pen Drives and Flash Drives: what's the difference? They're all USB powered memory devices or USB keys. Therefore they can be plugged into a computer and used as storage devices. Some of them, come with very small hard disks insted of memory. The confusion often arises because the name Memory Stick is used for the type of very small memory card used in digital cameras and music players, like MultiMedia Card (MMC), Secure Digital (SD), CompactFlash (CF), xD, SmartMedia.
